DRAINAGE LAYERS IN TERRARIUMS

A drainage layer in terrariums is unnecessary and not conducive to the health of the terrarium. Water collecting in drainage layers can harbor bacteria and disease, compromising the health of the terrarium. In addition, terrariums should never be watered so thoroughly that a drainage layer is necessary. If you DO want a drainage layer (as in the picture above), put a piece of plastic or protective barrier to keep excess water from seeping into the drainage layer.
